What Qualities Makes a Person a Good Friend

Hmm - that's an interesting question. That's one question we all would have thought about at some point in our lives. Well, to start of with, a good friend should understand you and accept you for who you are and not what you should be - according to them. A good friend should be able to keep your secrets and never divulge them to a third person under any circumstances - except when its for your own good. A good friend should give you an honest opinion - not a diplomatic opinion - when asked. He/she should be critical of you when criticism is warranted. They should bring you back to earth if you are floating in your own delusionary world. They should not be bothered about offering blunt advice if that's what is needed.

A Good Friend Would Be Someone.........

Source: Ernst Vikne

A good friend would be someone who expects no favors back from you and does not value your worth based on favors returned.

A good friend would be a selfless person who values your friendship more than material gains that can be had through his/her association with you.

A good friend should be someone who stands by you through thick and thin and supports you in your most difficult and darkest hours.

A good friend would never leave your side when you need them the most.

A good friend doesn't judge you for your shortcomings; instead, offers suggestions and advice to help you overcome those weak points.

A good friend is one whom you can count on when the rest of your family and supposed friends walk out on you.

A good friend is one who believes in you and supports you when all the rest think you are a goner and desert you.

A good friend is hard to find. So, if you do find a good friend, keep him/her. They are a rare breed and you'd do well to appreciate their worth and keep them.

Excellent Hub. I have a friend who is "floating in her own delusionary world" (words you used). I am trying to be a good friend to her by guiding her with hard-to-take criticism. She needs to hear it, as I am afraid she will sink deeper into a life of turmoil. Many times I feel I am coming across as judgmental. Although what I am doing is trying to set her straight where she is being misguided with the way she handles things. Your hub reinforces what I am doing. Thank you.

Glenn - thank you for stopping by and commenting. What you are doing is what any good friend should do! It could well be that she will misunderstand you or might not appreciate what you are doing (now), but she'd no doubt appreciate it later on!!

Only a good friend can criticize and tell you the facts as they are, which you are doing very well. Keep at it!! Thanks again Glenn for sharing your story.

Good friends are a rarity. Unfortunately, they are often underappreciated or taken advantage of. Good write.

Good topic. I believe, to have a good friend you must also be a good friend.
